I used Lucas' The Art of Public Speaking (11th Edition with Connect) for my Speech Advice grade at Baruch College. While I wound upwards existence very impressed with the textbook, I felt that it had a number of meaning shortcomings and wound up preferring Engleberg and Daly's Presentations in Everyday Life, which I used in a Public Speaking course at Wagner College.

First, the strengths. Lucas's book is the most recognizable textbook in the field for some practiced reasons. Lucas provides a very clear guide to public speaking, giving concrete examples of how to approach different types of speeches and how to arts and crafts and fix for them. The text is conspicuously stated, updated to refer to current events and bug, and beautifully illustrated. For those reasons, I think the volume is valuable.

But the biggest negative chemical element is its price point. Retailing at over $100, the book is merely not affordable for many students at public universities, and asking them to buy it is not ethical, especially when there are and then many competing options which are all cheaper--some at half the cost or less. The "Connect" multimedia CD is useful but probably role of the high price point, and ultimately I don't call up the CD is necessary at all for students to acquire finer from the book. A farther negative chemical element, in my heed, is that Lucas's text is singlemindedly focused on public speaking classes. I recollect information technology would be valuable to broaden the gaze of this volume to hash out how the skills taught in the volume can be applied to many other situations outside of the classroom and in daily life.

Even "confessions of a public speaker" was better despite beingness more entertainment and then practical tips.

To avoid at all costs unless you're a complete beginner!

Last but not least, readers can go to the website for the book and go through more exercises there.

I detect the principles in the book very uncomplicated but effective!

This volume presents public speaking in an interesting writing way. The discussions in the book are topical and the example speeches do a practiced job of showing the strengths and weaknesses of apprentice public speakers in a class. I idea information technology did a great job of pointing out things to recall most when making a voice communication that you may not automatically think about. I learned lessons that I will be able to use in argument and public speaking for a long time.

Every bit a preacher of the gospel who engages in public speaking every week of my life, I want to be as polished as possible. Preachers need to be as well rounded and gracious every bit possible, but at the end of the solar day our goal should exist to please the audience of One ☝️

Awful. Page after page of empty filler. Vocabulary words defined using the words being defined. Endless insipid report questions that neither challenge nor promote critical thinking. This book single handedly made me question the value of a college education. Like someone transcribed every TED talk into one IQ point leaching compendium.

This is an excellent volume full of not bad suggestions for writing and giving presentations. I can imagine any other book about public speaking being insanely dry out, just Lucas kept his capacity total of funny (if non completely conceivable) examples. He too includes great laundry lists of what to include in informative, persuasive, and group presentations. This book would definitely be helpful for students taking speech communication classes for the first time.
