Continuous Shooting not working - any ideas why?

Continuous Shooting not working - any ideas why?

My Nikon D5100 is only a few weeks old so I have to believe this is a user error issue. I have my camera in full auto mode, trying to get Continuous Shooting mode to work and nothing happens. It is shooting a single shot only. I appreciate any help you can give.

I know from nothing about Nikon, but my Canon 7D will not fire continuously in full auto either (by full auto in assume you mean the "Green Box"). You might try another mode, see what happens.

On the information display: see the 'S' surrounded by a rectangle, below the ISO info? That means the camera is in single frame mode. Change it to the three overlapping rectangles icon for continuous shooting.

Re: Continuous Shooting not working - any ideas why?

I don't own this particular model but have other Nikon cameras (D90 & D300). To really test if it is working, first make sure you have it set to "CH" or continuous high shutter release. Some models have a button dedicated to this on the outside and others rely on you setting it from the menu (I think the D5000 requires it set from the menu). Either way, consult you manuel to help you set this first so your camera will shoot at it's max 4 frames per sec. Next take off the lens and point the camera directly toward a bright light source like a light bulb or ceiling light. Depress the shutter release button with the lens off while pointed to the light source, and you should hear the camera fire away at maximum speed. You can try this in program auto mode also and it should work (not sure since I don't shoot in program auto much), especially since the camera should automatically select a fast shutter speed for the direct light. If you are paranoid about "dust getting into the sensor" you should be able to do this same trick with a lens on, just make sure you are aimed directly at the light source. If you have done all these steps and it still doesn;t work then you may have a problem with the camera. This is what I do when I want to "show off" the 8 frames per second with the D300 to my firends and it ensures I will get maximum shutter speed.

Don't give up yet. The test could not work if the D5000 wasn't properly set to Continuous shooting mode. If Continuous mode wasn't selected the camera wouldn't even fire, because it was probably still in Single frame mode that needs the camera to have a focus lock before the shutter will fire. When you are at the proper place to change the setting, you will see these choices under Release Mode, described on page 65 of the D5000's manual. thank you so much for going through all that trouble to paste that info! I did have it set correctly. I tried the test with the lens on inside pointing directly at the light. But, when I walked outside into daylight it fired away in continuous mode without any issues at all.

Perhaps when you were pointing it at the light it wasn't properly autofocusing and thus wouldn't take the shots. Until the camera finds focus, it won't take a shot. Autofocus generally works by looking for areas of contrast, and can't focus on a bright, consistent area with "nothing" to actually focus on - as the light you were aiming at may have been. Try focusing on a blank white wall or clear blue sky to demonstrate focus failure.

Also, you likely have a selection in the camera's set up menu where you can set it to 'focus priority' or 'shot priority' - if you were set to focus priority, the camera will not take a shot until is has confirmed focus...in shoot priority, it will fire the shutter even if focus has not been confirmed. I wonder if since you were indoors the camera hadn't achieved proper focus and was refusing to fire?

Also, generally 'full auto' mode is not best to use when wanting some control over settings - usually at that point you're better off going to Program Auto (P) mode, which will give you all the same automation options as automatic mode, but with the ability of the user to override many of the camera's settings, including drive mode, white balance, ISO, etc.

Not sure what exactly you mean by "pointing directly at the light". For example how far away was the light, and how much of the frame did it occupy?

What I'm thinking is that indoors, the camera on "auto" will attempt to fire the built-in flash. Even with a light source in the subject, this may still be the case.

Outdoors, chances are the flash is not required.

The point being this: many cameras won't do continuous shooting when the flash is in use.

Peter

Re: Was the flash in use?

I think she was referring to something I posted earlier which was just a suggestion of a quick way to check if the continuous shutter release was functional (assuming her camera settings were correct). Simplest thing I recommended was point the camera directly at a bright light source like a light bulb (with continuous high shutter release set) to show the max frames per second. It's something I do when I want to "show off" the max shutter speed of my camera to a firend and takes about second to test. Others have brought up other suggestions and ideas to further help trouble shoot.

I observed that if the camera is in automatic mode and needs flash, then the continuous shot mode won't work. You have to go to the non flash mode or any other mode which doesn't require a flash for continuous shot mode to work.
